Kavara's Bio

Hi : ) I am a fourth year med student at WVU. I'll be starting my residency in Psychiatry at WVU in a few months . . . although I have only lived in West Virginia for the last 10 years (only!), I am a West Virginian at heart now and I could not feel more privileged, proud, or content about staying here. If you want to be a Psychiatrist when you grow up, come to residency here! I will most likely do a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry after residency. Speaking of addicts, I am a running addict. If I am unable to run in Ghana, it will be the longest consecutive amount of time that I have gone without running since I was 13 years old, so watch out! Seriously. I've been running ultramarathons for the last 6 years (races longer than 26.2 miles). I ran my first 100 mile race at age 22. Other than that, I spend my time bowhunting, engaging in various activities in the mountains, and going to as many small, "indie" concerts and theatre productions as I can. I hope I don't upset my parents by saying my heart is in West Virginia now. I think they know this though. I grew up in Virginia and have two younger brothers (Hi Max!), parents who love and support me, as well as many other family members and a few close friends who do the same. I love and appreciate them back even though I am not always the best at showing it. I am looking forward to this trip . . . to serving the people of Ghana, living simply, pushing myself physically and emotionally, seeing Africa (for the first time!), spending time with my friends from here who are going, and learning more about what it means to devote one's entire life to God's service like the doctors we will be working with in Ghana have done.

I am so happy to be your mother, WV resident and all. I just hope you don't fall in love with Ghana and want to stay there!

Hi, Kavara! One of our attendings, Dr. Moerschel is going with you to Ghana. That's how I found out about this blog. I'm excited about your trip and am interested in hearing more about your adventures. I do hope that you get to do some running while you're there, but be careful. Best Wishes! Johanna Biola

What kind of person would even aspire to run a 100-mile race? Oh, yeah, the best kind!

When you arrive, Kavara, you'll have all sorts of positive vibes channeled from this side of the Atlantic!
